What could be more convincing, moreover, than the gesture of laying one's cards face up on the table?

(Jacques Lacan)

Rock-paper-scissors is group exhibition contemplating mark making, symbology and gesture. The title takes inspirations from a well know cyclical game played using three symbolic gestures. Seemingly random choices are made, but tactical players observe patterns and execute educated predictions in order to gain an advantage over their opponent. Rock-paper-scissors acts as a metaphor for the inanimate art object and the power of gesticulation held within the artists’ hands.

The works in this exhibition although seemingly disparate have a commonality, and this is that they draw from an evolving composite of shared references. There are images in this show that cite other images and there are works that quote pre-existing works or pay homage to the future. References critique, ironize and probe relying on a mutual understanding of a common visual language. What then completes these works is the audiences ability to hypothesize, seek connections, reflect, critique and analyse understanding the signs and signifiers presented by the artist, thus making the viewer integral to the form and function of the work.

ALANA LAKE & CHRISTOPHER RUSSELL

27/09/12 - 30/10/12

Solid Rock is the culmination of 4months work made on a residency in the Piedmont region of Italy.  The exhibition draws parallels between the works of artist/photographer Alana Lake (UK) and painter Chris Russell (USA).  Both artists display an interest in spiritualism and seek connections to nature and the great outdoors.

“The simulacrum is never what hides the truth — it is truth that hides the fact that there is none.  The simulacrum is true.”  Jean Baudrillard

Aubin Gallery present Little White Lies, an exhibition featuring painting, print, video, sculpture and installation by Alasdair Duncan, Angus Sanders - Dunnachie, Charlie Billingham, Eemil Karila, James Howard, Joey Holder and Takaaki Izumi, curated by Alana Lake.

When the grand illusion we understand as consensus reality is magically shifted through the power of representation the signs and totems that emerge transform the familiar into a funhouse version of the world we think we know. The concept of objective truth is fundamentally challenged and the safety of certainty becomes insecure, forcing us to reexamine our most scared assumptions.

The artist excels in this weird frontier of continually mutable and fluid meaning, exploiting the inherent vulnerabilities of connotation to leave the viewer disoriented by objects and ideas they previously believed to be concrete. Fragments of mass media, the detritus of advertising, graphic design, the Internet - everything is fair game to be re-appropriated and presented back to us in strange new variations.

The effect of these “Little White Lies” ranges from the invocation of a twisted realm of terror and foreboding, to an excursion through the amusingly satirical and cartoon. We are alternately gripped by abject terror, filled with a rapturous optimism and profoundly moved by the strange new lexicon that shimmers into being.

The ultimate result of such distortions is fascinating; ironically, rather then simply leading us even deeper into a wilderness of complex and bewildering iconography, the work is invariably incredibly elucidating.  For once the initial discomfort and novelty of the subversions fades we are liberated by them to appreciate new possibilities we may never have dared to explore.  Just as Perseus was only safe to view the Medusa by gazing at her reflection in his mirrored shield, it perhaps safer for us to consider what challenges us most by viewing it indirectly.

STILLEVEN is a culmination of almost two years work.  The exhibition emphasises my playful approach to image making, incorporating intervention and jarring composition. Juxtaposition is employed as a tool for introducing a non-linear fantasy narrative; atomised fragments collide to invoke the mythology of my connection to my surroundings.

Although my photographs are an account of what I see and feel, the work also operates on a more universal level; hinting at our shared reality of dislocation, obsession, isolation, loss and desire.  I have a recurring set of motifs that feature in my work; birds, hands, inversion and symmetry which symbolize freedom, death, rebellion and beauty in my personal iconography.

“Alana Lake is restless. She will not be what you want her to be. Refusing to be typecast, she does not fit into one of the half dozen or so categories which critics use to traverse contemporary art photography. She could easily fit into several; or all of them; and more besides.”   David Evans, 2011
